Taipei, in the north of Taiwan Island and at the center of the Taipei Basin, is the largest city in Taiwan. It is Taiwan political, economic and cultural center.

Taipei has advanced industry and commerce. Its industry mainly includes electrical machinery, electrical appliance, chemical engineering, printing, textiles and so on. After the longitudinal railways and main highways were built, Taipei became the land transportation hub of the whole island.

Though Taipei history is shorter than that of Tainan, it has no less scenic and historical sites. After the old Taipei city was demolished, a lot of city wall gates were left till today. The magnificent longshan Temple, built in 1738, the third year during Emperor Qianlong's reign in Qing Dynasty, is the oldest temple in Taiwan. Yangmingshan Scenic Area, adjoining Datun Volcanoes, is a large tourist area with its various charming scenic spots. Shuangxi Palace Museum outside Shilin district in this area houses a large number of tresures that came from Forbidden City in Beijing.

Taiwan main colleges and research organizations are assembled in Taipei, for example, Taiwan University, Normal University, Institute of Agriculture Research, and Institute of Forestry Research.
